It's almost summer and, if you haven't sorted out your closet yet(like me!), then here are some tips and tricks on how to start decluttering your closet in order to find your outfits to wear.
Are you ready? Let's do this!
1) Getting ready
This step is to prepare you for the 2-3 hours needed to clean out your closet. What you will need: a clipboard, some paper and a pen, some wooden(or sturdy plastic) hangers, some snacks(in case you get hungry, some water(very important to stay hydrated), some cool music, some storage boxes, garment bags and some garbage bags.
2) Take everything out of your closet
Lay each item on your bed or floor. This way, you will be able to see and sort out each item you own.
3) Sort your clothes
Create and separate the piles of clothing by type(jeans, pants, blouses, skirts, dresses, blazers, etc.)
4) Try on everything
Here, you will need to find out some of the following questions:
- does this still fit?
- have I worn it in the last 12-24 months?
- does it look good on me?
- is it damaged or worn?
- would I wear it again?
- does it have any sentimental value?
- do I have doubles?
5) Discard or keep
Once you have tried on every piece of clothing, now it's time to discard or keep. The discarded items go into bags for donations. The keep items go into storage(for seasonal items) or back into the closet.
You can also repurpose a piece of clothing. For example, an old tshirt can become a skirt. Just cut the top of the tshirt!
6) Hang clothes
When putting back your clothes into the closet, hang by activity type(work, weekend, special occasions) and by clothing type(skirts, blouses, etc.) That way you will see what clothes you have and which ones are for the activity in question.
A good tip to help you along with your fashion quest would be to take a before and after picture of your closet. Celebrate your achievement! You deserve it!
